Dr. Robbie Wilson at the University of Queensland in Australia wanted to know what makes a great soccer player. His studies showed that the best players have natural talents like endurance, speed, and the ability to make fast decisions.

But his research also showed that great soccer players have outstanding skills from hours and hours of practice. So even if a kid isn’t the fastest player on the team, practice can make him or her a top player.

Pelé the Great

Pelé may be the greatest of all soccer players. When he was born in Brazil in 1940, his parents named him Edson Arantes do Nascimento. His friends later called him Pelé. Pelé says that neither he nor his friends know why they called him that. It just happened.
